look, think, feel

Colin and I are currently meeting weekly to continue preparation and development of the project. Last week we talked about the things we ‘want’ from performance, and Colin summed these up as look, think, and feel.

Although expectations so often get in the way of my experience of watching work, these three things – to see/notice something interesting, to be given space to think (or to be compelled to think), and to feel something – are general enough to end up being inspired by a wide range of performances.

Our discussion – which stemmed from a shared interest in 3Abscheid by Anna Teresa de Keersmaeker and Jérôme Bel (at Sadlers Well on 21 November 2011) – is helping guide our decision making as we continue to understand the problems we have created for ourselves in developing Colin, Simon & I.

One Response to look, think, feel

  1. Shannon says:

Being ‘compelled to think’ when viewing performance, to me, is an incredible sensation. Can thinking be a sensation? Allowing the space for an audience to ‘feel’ can sometimes be the more difficult task. I wonder if we often view more from a thinking place then a feeling place. Anyway, i like the simplicity and generality of these three words in guiding the making process and yet it can be so complex.
